Health Update: Weight Loss or Wheelchair

I’ve been putting off writing this blog post for a week now. You may remember a couple of weeks ago I had an MRI scan, well the results are in and it’s not the news I’d hoped for but it was the news I was expecting. My quite ruined back is absolutely ruined, my dodgy disc has now vanished, leaving bone rubbing on bone and I have multiple disc bulges.

I’ve been referred for pain management, physio and told to think very careful about my next surgical option which is getting my spine fused. In the meantime I need to lose some weight to take the pressure off and to help get me fit for surgery. It’s no exaggeration to say that I’ve spent much of the past week crying. I will not feel sorry for myself now, I have a project to focus on. Losing weight.

I’ve done it before. In 2013 I lost about a stone and a half, mainly through starving myself and walking miles, but starving myself isn’t a sensible option. Nor can I walk for miles, I just don’t have the time these days. So what am I going to do?

I’ve logged back in to ‘My Fitness Pal’ which is an app where you diarise your food and exercise each day. I’m aiming to eat around 1300 calories a day to begin with and its already starting to have a positive effect. I’ve lost a couple of pounds in just under a week. I’m feeling positive about that. I’m trying not to drink, or drink as much. I went to the pub with a friend and drank diet coke and survived. It’s doable.

We’re going away for half term and I’m not going to deny myself nice food and drink, but it will be in moderation, I’d just like to get a bit of a head start on losing weight before I go.

As for exercise, well I am quite limited in what I can do. I spent Monday morning helping out at school and both of my legs have been numb ever since, I know resting will help the feeling come back, it’s just stuff from inside my discs pressing on some nerves. It’s weird, it’s worrying but it’s kind of normal for me.

I can walk, so when I can I will. I can swim, so I know I must make an effort to get down to the local pool during their ridiculously restrictive swimming times. And I’ve just bought myself a Fitbit which should help me get an idea about my current level of (in)activity and hopefully help motivate me to improve.

I think long term it’s going to be about making small changes, keeping moving, drinking less, making better choices about what I eat. It’s a long journey, a lifetime journey but if I want to stay out of a wheelchair and on my feet then it needs to be done. Wish me luck.

Not a Diet… but a Lifestyle Change

In the New Year I wrote this blog post about body confidence, and with it a picture of me in my pants. It was I’ll admit a fairly brave thing to do. It’s taken a long time to love and accept me for the awesome, beautiful, imperfect creature I am. I love me. Of course there are things I’d like to change, make smaller, make bigger, make less wrinkly, but I’m 37 now and much of that isn’t going to magic itself perfect. Ever.

Around the same time I outlined my resolution for the year – in 2014 I resolve to become fitter and healthier in body and mind. Fair dos. It’s a goal, maybe a bit of an airyfairy one, but I knew then and I know now what I need to do to achieve that.

This week I’ve started the SlimPod programme with Thinking Slimmer. It’s not a faddy diet, it works by listening to a hypnosis recording every night for 3 weeks. It persuades your subconscious to make you make positive changes. Smaller portions, more exercise, whatever you know you need to do to turn yourself into the person and shape you want to be.

It doesn’t focus on actual weight loss, in fact I’m discouraged from getting the scales out every day or even every week. Success, or not, is measured in inches off rather than pounds lost. I’ve only listened to it twice, mainly because today is day two, so I can’t comment on how successful it will be.

I’ve taken my measurements, I’ve filled in my goal setting sheet and I’ve shared my ambitions for finding the new fitter, slimmer me on their Facebook group. It’s all systems go.

I’ll be on this for the next 12 weeks and I’ll be blogging my progress periodically. So stay tuned.

  1. Exercise more often
  2. Lose the muffin top before my holiday in June
  3. Drink less alcohol

Lent 2014

The last few months seems to have been all about giving things up. Last October (and yes, again last month) I gave up smoking. Three weeks ago I gave up (for one month only) coffee, tea and diet coke. Now Lent is upon us once more and it’s time to decide what I’ll eschew for the next 6 weeks.

For the past 15 or so years I’ve given up chocolate. Or crisps and chocolate. Sometimes I might throw something else into the mix, like cake or something. I’ve toyed with the idea of giving up alcohol, but such an idea is wholly inconceivable!

I’ve thought long and hard this year about what to do. I eat so much bread, too much bread and I know that it piles the weight on me when I do, so I’ve decided to give up leavened bread as well as crisps and chocolate.

I know that it’s something I can work with. I can still have pitta and tortillas but no big, doughy baps. It’s no bad thing. I like giving things up, it’s an exercise in self control and proof that I can do without naughty things.

The first week is always the worst, because you’re used to just reaching for the wrong things, after that it does get easier and I enjoy the challenge of it.
