Designing our dream pet with Petplan Insurance

England is a nation of animal lovers, whether you come down on the side of cats or dogs is up to you. If I were to give you a clue as to which side our household cheers for, we got a puppy 18 months ago and our carpets have never quite been the same since. She’s due to be “done” at the vets next week, thank goodness we’ve got Pet Insurance from Petplan, because we could probably have gone somewhere lovely on holiday for what her calamities over the last 18 months might have cost us otherwise.

Review - Meg Heath Dog Leads & Collars

We seem to have a knack of finding the clumsiest pups. One of my excitable dogs used to love to run through brambles with her eyes open. Look away now if you’re squeamish, but she used to regularly have her eyelids sewn shut so they could heal. Thankfully our current pup Penny seems fractionally more sensible, fractionally.

Petplan Insurance offer Lifetime Policies, which can be a financial lifesaver. Having had two dogs who were diagnosed with cancer, but could live a good quality life for another year or two with treatment, I know just how much the vet bills can add up without pet insurance, especially if the cost of renewing their insurance is prohibitive.

This month Petplan Insurance asked us if the boy would like to design his own dream pet. Would he ever! If I could design my dream pet it would not chew everything to bits and it would pick up after itself when it went to the toilet. If I were to push things a little further, the ability to help with the household chores wouldn’t go amiss either.

Designing our dream pet with Petplan Insurance

But the boy has different ideas. He wanted a spotty dog with a very waggy tail and a giraffes body. It also had a cats head, just like his favourite cat Roxy who lives up the road. What he designed as his dream pet was slightly bonkers looking, but I think it might just fit right in here.

I sent a photo of his dream pet off to Petplan Insurance and a week or so later an exciting squishy package arrived in the post. When I opened it and was so excited by what the package contained that I let out a squeal. I knew the boy would love it. You can see his reaction below…

As I write this, he’s snuggled up in bed with “Spotty” and it’s very sweet to see. I love the idea that he got to design his own dream pet and some clever person somewhere managed to perfectly recreate it from his drawing.

Designing our dream pet with Petplan Insurance

Spotty is a very welcome new addition to the pets in this household. Though I fear those spotty legs might need some special cream from the vets!

Toy Review: Posh Paws Jurassic World Two Range

The eagerly awaited film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is released in the UK on 7th June. This is a real treat for dino fans and not to give too much away, but Jurassic World Two follows what happens when the dinosaurs escape the island – scary stuff! Posh Paws International the official soft toy partner for the 2018 summer’s blockbuster, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. To celebrate the launch of the film, they have launched their Posh Paws Jurassic World Two range. I got my hands on a few of the dinos.

Fans can collect 8 inch, 10 inch and HUGE 21 inch variations of their favourite dinos. Or even Accessorise backpacks with Posh Paws Jurassic World bag clips! We got our hands on the 10 inch Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Triceratops cuddly toys as well as an Stygimoloch bag clip.

Toy Review: Posh Paws Jurassic World Two Range

The cuddly Tyrannosaurus Rex and the Triceratops are incredibly cute, they have lovely squishy features and are perfect for cuddling and snuggling. They appear to be well made with good stitching and each had a Jurassic World badge on their hind leg.

As well as the T-Rex and Triceratops, there are lots of other dinosaurs in the range, so whichever your favourite is, there’s bound to be one of your favourites to choose from. Other dinos in the range include; Mososaurus, Stygimoloch, Blue Raptor, Grey Triceratops, Indominus Rex and of course the velociraptor.

Toy Review: Posh Paws Jurassic World Two Range

These Posh Paws Jurassic World Two cuddly toys are suitable for ages 2+. I gave them to my 7 year old who really, really loves dinosaurs and he was blown away by the detail. The “skin” looks scaly, but is smooth and soft to the touch. They have lovely squishy feet and more detail than I’ve seen in other dino cuddly toys. The bag clip immediately found its way onto his school bag, so that’ll be proudly shown off to his classmates tomorrow.

Do we love these Posh Paws Jurassic World Two cuddly toys? Yes. Would we buy the whole range? Almost certainly. Priced at around £15 I know the boy will want them all to help guard his bed at night. We think they’re roarsome!

The Posh Paws Jurassic World Two range is available on amazon or in Sainsburys now.

Five things you could get your Dad for Father’s Day

Dad’s are easy to buy for aren’t they? A snazzy pair of socks and some beer and they’re happy. But surely we can do a bit better than that? Dad’s are brilliant and if you can’t treat them on Father’s Day, when can you? I’ve got a few nice ideas for things that aren’t socks to give your dad this Father’s Day.

If Dad is a fan of Star Wars, then he might like everyone’s favourite wingman, Chewbacca as a present. Posh Paws have recently released their Chewbacca range, featuring lots of our favourite characters from Star Wars.

Star Wars Toys: Posh Paws Chewbacca Collection

If Star Wars isn’t this thing, then Hallmark have a really huge selection of Itty Bittys to choose from. Last year the boy painted a Superman mug for his Dad and we put a Superman Itty Bitty in it. They’ve got Marvel Itty Bittys, as well as  Disney, Star Wars, DC Comics, Super Hero Girls, The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Wizard of Oz, Peanuts and Wedding itty bittys.

Five things you could get your Dad for Father's Day

We got one of these brilliant MANCUNIAN t-shirts for my other half last year. It was by far his favourite present of the year. From The Manchester Bee Company, this t-shirt is just £15 and is about the coolest thing a Manc can wear. They also have loads of other Manchester Bee themed gifts and t-shirts for Proper Mancs.

Five things you could get your Dad for Father's Day

We love making memories, so a Merlin Annual Pass would make fora brilliant Father’s Day present. Whether you fancy the thrills and spills of Alton Towers or Chessington World of Adventures. Or if you love a bit of LEGOLAND or spending time at a SEA LIFE Centre, the Merlin Annual Pass is just the thing to help you and your family make memories.

Merlin Annual Pass launches its BIG January sale

If your Dad is more of a foodie, what about a nice hamper? A foodie treat always goes down well in our house. This hamper from hamper.com is a lovely celebration of Australian food and drink, it was a real Father’s Day treat for my better half. Plus it’s just the thing to get delivered if you’re not going to see Dad on Father’s Day.

Father's Day Gifts: A hamper fit for a barbecue king!

Lastly, don’t forget to buy your Dad a card. Hallmark have some lovely Father’s Day cards this year, something for every Dad, whatever he’s interested in. Personally the boy has plumped for the card with the badge on, because cards with badges are the best kind of cards!

What will you be buying the Dads in your life for Father’s Day? Have you got any exciting ideas planned?

Blogger Board Game Club: Stuffed Fables

I am part of the Asmodee UK Blogger Board Game Club run by Playtime PR. Each month 50 bloggers are sent a board game to play and put to the test. This month we were sent the Stuffed Fables game to play.

Stuffed Fables is a Story based board game from Plaid Hat Games. It’s a role play game which fans of Pixar films will probably really enjoy.  All of the action takes place in the spiral-bound storybook which contains all the rules, a story guide, and game board.

Blogger Board Game Club: Stuffed Fables

In the box you will find –

1 Rulebook; 1 Storybook; 40 Card Discovery Deck; 1 Sideboard; 6 Stuffy Figures; 17 Minion Figures; 35 Dice; 1 Dice Bag; 15 Buttons; 6 Character Cards; 29 Lost Cards; 10 Sleep Cards; 46 Item Cards; 12 Minion Cards; 8 Environment Cards; 34 Status Cards; 4 Reference Cards; 30 Stuffing Tokens; 15 Heart Tokens; 4 Objective Tokens; 4 Lost Tokens; 1 Bookmark Token; a Red Wagon Token; 1 Train Token and 1 Door Token.

Blogger Board Game Club: Stuffed Fables

As you can see, there are a lot of elements to this game and if you like quick fire games with simple rules, this game is not for you. To play it properly I think someone needs to sit down for an evening, read the rules and fully understand them so they can lead the rest of the group. We played a couple of chapters. It took a long time and there was a lot of reading and re-reading of the rules which probably made it feel like harder work than it was.

The story follows a group of stuffed toys who are sworn to protect the little girl who owns them and loves them. The stuffed toys awake to defend the little girl from all the monsters who creep out at night. Each player plays the role of one of the heroic stuffed toys; so throughout the game you must fight to defend the little girl and keep her safe. Stuffed Fables is suitable for people aged 7+.

Blogger Board Game Club: Stuffed Fables

To play, you assign and roll colour-coded dice to perform a variety of actions, from melee attacks, to leaping across conveyor belts, or steering a racing wagon down a hill. The chapters are one page long and the action should be quicker than we managed. Some of the characters really reminded us of the Toy Story films. You don’t have to play it all in one sitting, you can play a chapter or two at a time and got back to it later. This makes is fairly easy to dip in and out of, but it’d probably best if you can play for an hour or two in one sitting.

I’ve spoken to several friends over the last few days about Stuffed Fables, half of them didn’t like it, the other half really loved it. I think if you’re into Dragon Crawler type role play, then you will most likely love this. If you’ve never tried role play before, then this will take some getting used to. I quite liked it and suspect if I was playing with people who also enjoyed it then I would love it. I think I need to find different people to play this with. My husband just didn’t like it and that made it feel like hard work.

Blogger Board Game Club: Stuffed Fables

There are a lot of bits and pieces in the box, it’s a complex game with lots of elements. It costs around £55 which is a lot of money to spend on a board game; but with all the elements and figures included and the amount of game play in there, I think it’s probably worth it. It’s very beautifully illustrated and put together, which makes it really feel like a premium product. It’s quite a niche game, but role play fans will almost certainly enjoy playing it.

Stuffed Fables is available from a wide range of retailers including Amazon.

We were sent the Stuffed Fables game for review for the Asmodee UK Blogger Board Game Club. All images and opinions are our own.

Recipe: Chocolate Dipped Candied Orange Slices

A little while ago I shared with you my recipe for candied orange slices. They are brilliant for decorating orange and citrus cakes with, but they also make sweet treats when they’re dipped in chocolate. My chocolate dipped candied orange slices are brilliant bagged up and given as gifts. They’re an ideal little treat if you’ve got a glut of oranges to use up too.

I like to make a big batch of these at Christmas and give little bags of them as presents for people. They’re also a really nice treat to take away on holiday to nibble with a nice glass of good red wine in the evening.

Recipe: Chocolate Dipped Candied Orange Slices

Chocolate Dipped Candied Orange Slices

Ingredients:
2 oranges, fairly finely sliced
1 mug of caster sugar
1 mug of boiling water (add more if required)
8 drops of Spice Drops Orange Zest Extract
150g good quality dark chocolate

Method:
In a sauté pan gently warm the water and sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Add your Spice Drops Orange Zest Extract and put your slices of orange in the pan.

Gently poach the orange slices for around an hour or so with the lid off the pan. Make sure you turn them over every 15 minutes or so. You want the oranges to go translucent; once they do, they’re ready.

Carefully lay your orange slices on a cooling rack (make sure you put some paper towel underneath to catch any drips) and leave to cool and solidify overnight.

Recipe: Chocolate Dipped Candied Orange Slices

When the candied oranges have dried and set, melt your chocolate in a bain marie (a glass bowl over a saucepan with an inch or so of water underneath, make sure the water doesn’t touch the glass bowl) until it’s smooth and silky. Dip your slices in the melted chocolate and leave to set for an hour or so. Enjoy with a cup of good coffee.

If you want to really boost the orange flavour in this treat, add around 4 drops of Spice Drops Orange Zest Extract to the chocolate as you melt it.

Kids Craft: Make a Super Simple Woolly Sheep Card

A few weeks ago we made a really cute Woolly Sheep Pencil Topper and we were bitten by the sheep crafting bug. This Woolly Sheep Card is really simple to put together and looks very effective. You could send this card for all kinds of occasions, everyone loves a homemade card don’t they?

Our family have a particular affinity with sheep, my name before I married was Woolley and we’ve always had woolly sheep as our unofficial family mascot. This card will be perfect to send to my Woolley relatives!

Kids Craft: Make a Super Simple Woolly Sheep Card

How to make a Super Simple Woolly Sheep Card

You will need:
1 A4 piece of card, whatever colour you want
4 circular cotton wool pads
A small piece of black card for the face
Two googly eyes
A pair of scissors
PVA glue
A black felt tip pen

Kids Craft: Make a Super Simple Woolly Sheep Card

How to make your woolly sheep card:
Fold your coloured piece of card in half. Decide how best to arrange and overlap your cotton wool pads in order to make the body of a cuddly sheep and then using the PVA glue, glue the cotton wool pads onto the card. Leave the glue to dry for a little while.

While the glue is drying, take your black card and draw the shape of a sheep’s head on it. Carefully cut it out. Using glue, stick the googly eyes into place, leave to dry if need be. Using more glue, stick the sheep’s head onto the cotton wool pad body.

Then using the black felt tip pen, draw on two legs below the body of the sheep. Your card is now complete, though you might want to leave the glue to dry before you write your card and pop it in the post!

Who will you send your woolly sheep card to?

Children’s Books: Five Terrific Books about Turtles

Today (23rd May) is World Turtle Day, and a day of celebration of the turtle. For World Turtle Day we are asked to think about what we can do to help turtles and tortoises survive and thrive. What can we do to keep their habitat healthy? Of course, one of the biggest answers is reduce the amount of throw away plastics we use. I’ve picked out five books about turtles where you can find out more about these remarkable and quirky creatures.

Children's Books: Five Terrific Books about Turtles

Five Terrific Books about Turtles

National Geographic Kids – Mission: Sea Turtle Rescue: All About Sea Turtles and How to Save Them by Karen Romano Young is a brilliant book to start exploring the world of sea turtles. This introduction to sea turtles is packed full of in-depth information about their habitats, challenges, and conservation successes. Plus ideas for what kids can do to help save these amazing endangered creatures.

Turtles and Tortoises – What’s the Difference? by Lisa M Herrington explores the difference between turtles and tortoises. They’re both reptiles. They both have shells and move fairly slowly. So how do you tell the difference between turtles and tortoises? This is a lovely book for pre-schoolers and is filled with handy  identification clues to help you learn the difference between turtles and tortoises.

The Coral Kingdom by Laura Knowles and Jenny Webber celebrates the beauty, diversity and fragile ecosystem of the coral reef. This visually stunning picture book has a strong ecological message about the need to protect this most precious environment. Follow and explore the life cycle, diversity and colour of the coral reef ecosystem; learn about the threats the reef faces and what we can do to save it. Each beautifully illustrated page is packed full of delightful sea creatures to discover and enjoy. A beautiful book with a powerful message.

The Sandman and the Turtles by Michael Morpurgo. The Sandman and the Turtles is a fantastic summer read for children from acclaimed children’s author, Michael Morpurgo. The story tells the tale of Dadci and his tall stories about the Sandman, the old Russian sea captain and blood-red dragon in his lair. His little cousin Polly believes every word of the magical tales and she’s determined to make it all come true. It’s a lovely story for children ages 7-11 and a real page turner!

Aesop’s Fables the Hare and the Tortoise by Miles Kelly. No round up of books about turtles and tortoises is complete without a mention of this classic story. The Hare and the Tortoise is the tale of a too speedy hare who takes on the slow but steady tortoise in a race, a story which showcases the benefits of persistence, resilience and just getting on with the job. More haste, less speed!

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

We are big fans of Adventure Golf, we always try to play a round when we can. Last year we went to Bents Garden and Home to play their Jurassic Cove Adventure Golf. This week we visited again, they’ve recently extended the dinosaur golf to include nine extra holes of pirate golf, this we had to see!

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

Bents Home and Garden is a huge garden centre with lots of things to do. To get to the Adventure Golf you need to head through the garden centre and go outside, go left when you get outside and you should see the Jurassic Cove Adventure Golf shop building. Go in, pay and collect your club and ball as well as your score card.

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

The dino golf was originally just 9 holes, with the pirate extension it doubles the number of holes to 18. The first 9 are dino, the last 9 are pirate. I think the dino holes of the adventure golf at Bents have been re-jigged a little to freshen them up. The dinosaurs were epic, they’re so well done, some of them move and roar and even though we’d seen them before we were all so impressed.

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

The pirate extension was very well done, it moves from a dino landscape into a water filled pirate world. There’s a big pirate ship which they’ve incorporated into the course, as well as a whale, crocodile and a host of pirates, some of which looked quite familiar.

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

The pirate golf is very well done. Each hole is reasonably tricky, without being too hard. My 7 year old had the most fun playing all 18 holes of Adventure Golf. I liked the little details; like incorporating the pirate ship into the play and having to putt the ball into a hole in the whale’s mouth.

If I had to find something to criticize; it would be good if they had a sign suggesting what a good par would be (the ideal number of shots for each hole); just so you know how well, or not so well you’re doing.

Days Out: Adventure Golf at Bents Garden and Home

Depending on how busy it is, the course should occupy the family for around an hour.  There’s also a small shop where you can buy dino and pirate themed toys, most of which are inexpensive. Outside there’s a playground near the cafe where the kids can play while you have a drink.

The Adventure Golf costs £21 for two adults and two children. Information about their opening times and prices can be found on their website.

Disclosure: We were invited guests of Bents Garden and Home and we were not asked to pay for our golfing session, though we have paid previously and would do again.

Star Wars Toys: Posh Paws Chewbacca Collection

This month sees the much anticipated release of the latest Star Wars installment – Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film tells the story of how a young Han Solo met his future co-pilot Chewbacca. Fans can celebrate the release of the movie with Posh Paw’s collection of Chewbacca (and other) Star Wars soft toys. I’ve been lucky enough to get my paws on some of the new collection ahead of their release to the general public. Meet the Posh Paws Chewbacca Collection.

Star Wars Toys: Posh Paws Chewbacca Collection

Chewbacca is one of my favourite characters, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love this larger than life Wookie. The 1o inch tall Chewbacca soft toy is super-fluffy and would make the perfect present for any Jedi fan. His facial hair is a little unruly, but some grooming would get him looking as well-kempt as in the films. He costs around £14.99 and is available in toy shops and on Amazon.

I loved the 8 inch Chewbacca and Yoda figures, Chewy is just as fluffy as he should be and Yoda has a real attitude which is as it should be. These 8 inch Star Wars soft toys cost £9.99 each and are really collectible. I could definitely see a shelf of these heroic cuties in my son’s bedroom!

Star Wars Toys: Posh Paws Chewbacca Collection

Lastly there is the range of Star Wars soft and squishy bag clips to collect. We got our paws on Chewbacca and R2:D2 and they’re just the thing to help personalise my son’s school bag.

Each of these soft toys is also available as other Star Wars characters including; Stormtroopers, Yoda, Porgs and Darth Vader. They’re all suitable for ages 2+, but I’m going to have a hard time sharing them with any children. I think I’ll be keeping the 10 inch Chewy and the 8 inch Yoda for myself. That’s fair isn’t it?

Father’s Day Gifts: A hamper fit for a barbecue king!

With Father’s Day being in June, it’s a bit of a tradition for us to mark the occasion with a barbecue in the sunshine. The whole family come together, grill some meat, eat huge salads and just hang out together. It’s a lovely relaxed way to spend the day in celebration of the Dads in the family. This year, in a nod to family tradition I’ve ordered an Australian Indulgence hamper for my other half.

The Australian Indulgence hamper is described as “the ultimate hamper for Aussie food lovers”; or just a great thing to bring along to a barbecue. The hamper includes all the things you’d associate with Australia – a jar of Vegemite, a packet of Tim Tams, some Australian Red and White Wine, Bundaberg drinks, a Cherry Ripe bar, Arnotts barbecue shapes, caramelised onion chutney, and of course a bottle of barbecue Sauce.

Father's Day Gifts: A hamper fit for a barbecue king!

The hamper comes in an open wicker gift basket which is a handy thing to have once you’ve finished all the goodies inside. Delivery was free and you can choose next or named day delivery too. I always like it when I can choose the delivery date. You can add a gift message too.

We’ve ordered ours early and it’s been put away ready for Father’s Day. The boy will be making a nice gift card of his own to go with it and I need to pop to the butchers and order some sausages; but otherwise that’s Father’s Day pretty much sorted in one lovely hamper!

The products in this Australian Indulgence Hamper are really recognisable; especially if you’ve been brought up on a TV diet of Home and Away and Neighbours.

Father's Day Gifts: A hamper fit for a barbecue king!

We’ve had a few different hampers before, what I liked about this was it was most definitely a hamper and not just a cardboard box of stuff. Everything was well chosen and I know he will really enjoy the contents. My other half literally has everything he could ever want or need. These days we tend to buy food and drink gifts for him and this really hits the mark.

This hamper cost £79 but hamper.com have a really good range of Father”s Day hampers from £25 and to suit all kinds of tastes. Personally I’d be very happy with the whisky and cheese hamper, but I guess I’ll have to drop some hints closer to my birthday.

I know this Australian Indulgence Hamper will go down a storm at our Father’s Day barbecue; with wine and Tim Tams for pudding how could it not?

What are you doing for Father’s Day? What kid of hamper would your Dad enjoy?

Disclosure: We were sent this hamper for review purposes. All images and opinions are our own.
