DVD Review: Sheep and Wolves

The animated kids film Sheep and Wolves was released on DVD this week. Set in a magical faraway land, this animated family adventure shows what it’s really like to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

When a lovable wolf named Grey is magically transformed into a ram after taking a mysterious potion, he is forced to overcome his fears in order to regain the trust of the pack and its most beautiful she-wolf, Bianca. But how can he do that when all he has are three days, two horns and four hooves?

Sheep and Wolves DVD Review

Sheep and Wolves features the voices of Tom Felton (Harry Potter 1-8), Ruby Rose (Pitch Perfect 3), Jim Cummings (Winnie the Pooh) and China Anne McClain (Black Lightening). This PG rated animation was originally released in Russia and its UK release has been eagerly awaited.

Sheep and Wolves is a really engaging story. It’s colourful, the animation is great with fantastic attention to detail; the fur on the wolves is especially well done. It’s rated PG, so it’s probably not great for very young children, but it was right on the mark for my 7 year old. Even better, there was no toilet humour, which makes a nice change; most kids films have a million fart jokes I can do without these days.

With a running time of just 81 minutes, parts of this film do seem a little rushed. There could be a little more character development in places, but this is a minor niggle from an adult perspective. It’s an all’s well that ends well tale which will entertain and engage children, especially if they love wolves!

Sheep and Wolves is available on DVD now!

Review: PAW Patrol Game On! DVD

PAW Patrol – we’re on a roll! Good news PAW Patrollers, everyone’s favourite rescue pups are back in action in their brand new DVD – PAW Patrol Game On! which is released on 22nd May.

My son adores PAW Patrol and he was incredibly excited to get his paws on this DVD a couple of weeks before its UK release. In these seven exciting, sports-themed episodes, the PAW Patrol team take part in some daring rescues and amazing adventures.

Giveaway & Review: PAW Patrol Game On! DVD

The PAW Patrol Game On! DVD includes seven sporty episodes –

Pups Save a Basketball Game – Mayor Goodway needs a basketball team, so she calls Ryder and the PAW Patrol for help. The pups team up to become the “Adventure Bay All-Stars” and they’ll need everyone, including an uncertain Marshall, to pitch in and help win the game for Adventure Bay.

Pup-Fu! –The PAW Patrol and the mischievous kittens from Mayor Humdinger’s Kit-tastrophe Crew are both competing for their martial arts belts when they come across an ancient scroll that holds a wealth of secrets. Mayor Humdinger steals the scroll and the PAW Patrol is called upon to find and return it back to Sensei Yumi.

Pups Save the Mayor’s Race – It’s the annual Mayor’s Race and Mayor Goodway is determined to beat the devious Mayor Humdinger. Mayoral contestants need to row a boat, swim and race to the finish line. The pups need to help Mayor Goodway train for the running race and deal with Mayor Humdingers’ disasters.

Pups Save a Snowboard Competition – Jake and Everest are excited for the big Snowboard Competition, until they look outside and see the course is completely buried under a blanket of snow. The rescue pups help to clear the course and rescue the Kit-tastrophe crew kittens who have fallen off a cliff. Everest uses her grappling hook to lower Ryder down the edge of the cliff and her snowboard jet pulls them back up to safety.

Pups Save the Soccer Game – When devious Mayor Humdinger challenges the Adventure Bay team to a soccer match, Ryder and the PAW Patrol are called in to play. The PAW Patrol players start strong but a series of mysterious mishaps jeopardise their team’s victory. The pups must work as a team to overcome some dirty tricks by Mayor Humdinger and win the match!

Pups Great Race – It’s Adventure Bay Race Day and the Pups are about to race each other all across the town to see who is the fastest pup. One other competitor unexpectedly shows up though, Alex in his super trike!

Pups Save a Tightrope Walker – Francois Turbot is bravely walking a tightrope between the top of the Bridge and the Lookout Tower, but storm clouds and seagulls threaten to ruin his act! It’s time to call the PAW Patrol to help get him safely to the other side.

My six year old son has been a massive (seriously massive) PAW Patrol fan for around three years now and his love to Ryder and the PAW Patrol team shows no sign of waning. I fully expected him to love this DVD and I was not mistaken. He’s watched the DVD several times in its entirety and then dipped in and out. The PAW Patrol Game On! DVD is an absolute must for any mini PAW Patrol fan!

Review: Pip Ahoy! DVD – Welcome to Salty Cove

Since Pip Ahoy burst onto our screens in 2014 the small boy has been fascinated by the goings on at Salty Cove. For those who haven’t yet seen Pip Ahoy It is all about the adventures of Pip the puppy, and his friends including kitten Alba and Alan the penguin (Alan is our favourite)  in the seaside town of Salty Cove. Pip Ahoy features the familiar voices of David Jason, Stacy Soloman, Teresa Gallagher and Jimmy Hibbert.

Pip Ahoy is aimed at pre-schoolers and is shown on Milkshake (Channel 5) and on Cartoonito. The boy makes a special effort every morning to get up and watch it while he has his breakfast, so we treated him to a copy of the latest Pip Ahoy DVD – Welcome to Salty Cove. He was delighted!

Welcome to Salty Cove contains all 13 episodes of Pip Ahoy season 1 and is 2 hours and 23 minutes long. It’s a long DVD for a pre-schooler to sit and watch in one go, but you can pick and choose the episodes you watch so you can mix it up each day. We watched it over a few days after school and it was nice to sit and snuggle up together.

Pip Ahoy is a brightly coloured cartoon with easy to follow story-lines which are all about friendship and kindness. It’s lovely heartwarming stuff and Pip, Alba and Alan are very popular (I work in a toy shop, I should know) and the songs in the series are brilliant and make fantastic earworms – we’re still singing the penguin song from the Christmas episode!

Welcome to Salty Cove contains the following episodes –

  • The Mice Pirates
  • Fancy That!
  • Snooze Cruise
  • The Mermaid
  • Pizza Pirates
  • Pasty Flies a Kite
  • Stunt Gull Hopper
  • Auntie Twitcher’s Bird Watch
  • The Rocktopus
  • My Turn
  • Anybody Seen Alan?
  • The Wrong Way Train
  • Shelvis’ New Home

As always there’s lots going on in Salty Cove, the episodes are so bright and cheery too. With any series there are always favourite episodes which are watched over and over again, I like “Anybody Seen Alan?” where he bounces off the see-saw and off into adventure; the boy loves “The Rocktoppus” where a drumming octopus loses his drumsticks and it ends with a brilliant underwater gig.

The DVD also comes with a free A3 activity sheet to colour in, do a dot-to-dot or spot the difference. The Pip Ahoy DVD Welcome To Salty Cove is available from Amazon and a range of other retailers for around £7.99.

I will be taking part in the Pip Ahoy! Twitter party on Thursday 25th February from 1-2.30pm. Pip Ahoy! will be giving away 20 copies of the Welcome To Salty Cove DVD to some partying Pipsqueaks. Use the hashtag #PipAhoy to join in.

Review: Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale DVD

I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely on the countdown to Christmas now. My head is filled with plots and schemes for making the run up to Christmas a magical one for the small boy and our little family. One of the things we like to do is snuggle up on the sofa and watch Christmassy DVDs together.

As a child I used to love Peter Rabbit, so I was naturally thrilled when he returned to our screens just in time for my son to enjoy it too, Peter Rabbit and Friends is a series we do watch and enjoy together, so I was really pleased to be sent a copy of Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale DVD from Abbey Home Media. The DVD was released on Monday 2nd November and it’s the perfect DVD to watch with your little ones this Christmas.

Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale DVD

This new DVD features Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale and seven other adventurous wintery episodes from Peter, Benjamin, Lilly and friends. Episodes on this festive DVD include –

Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale – When Mr. Bouncer gets too sick to make the important holiday supply delivery, Peter and Benjamin take it upon themselves to brave a blizzard (and Mr. Tod) to get the job done and meet a new friend along the way.

The Tale of the Uninvited Badger – When Tommy Brock decides he’s had enough of the cold, he takes shelter by the fire inside the Bouncer’s Burrow. It’s up to Peter and his friends to devise a way of getting the grumpy badger out and to make sure he doesn’t come back!

The Tale of the Runaway Rabbit – Peter is left to babysit Cotton-tail but can’t resist an exciting event at the Squirrel camp. He brings his sleeping sister along but soon must rescue her when she wakes up and crawls away

The Tale of the Stolen Firewood – When Peter, Lily and Benjamin go out to collect firewood, they soon find that not one but three predators are after some too. Can the rabbits stage a series of daring raids to retrieve it?

The Tale of the Grumpy Owl – When Old Brown takes Peter’s Journal, Peter must choose between saving his most precious possession and saving a friend.

The Tale of the Lucky Four-Leaf Clover – When Benjamin finds a four-leaf clover, Peter tricks him into thinking it brings good luck. It’s harmless fun until Peter’s prank accidentally leads Lily into Mr. Tod’s dangerous clutches!

The Tale of the Big Move – When Lily’s father decides to move the family out of the Lake District, Peter comes up with a clever, but dangerous, plan to change Dr. Bobtail’s mind.

The Tale of the Greedy Fox – When Peter tells an impulsive lie, which leads Jemima Puddle-Duck into Mr. Tod’s clutches, he must act fast to stop her from becoming the fox’s dinner!

With over 100 minutes of animated action, Peter Rabbit’s Christmas Tale DVD was a real winner for our family, lots of action, lots of adventure and lots of festive fun. For more information about Peter Rabbit and Friends you can join the Peter Rabbit Club on Facebook.

Review: Milkshake Stars DVD Collection

Packing for my birthday weekend away, I shoved the small boy’s portable DVD player in the car along with his brand new Milkshake Stars DVD, hoping that around 2 hours of DVD fun would keep him entertained on the journey up to Whinfell. The Milkshake Stars DVD features well loved favourites including Thomas & Friends, Peppa Pig, Fireman Sam, Little Princess and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom. It’s fair to say it was a really good thing to take with us.

The small boy loves Milkshake. He races downstairs every morning to catch up on the latest goings on with Peppa Pig and Thomas & Friends. He loves Fireman Sam too, he doesn’t have gender bias either, he’s equally as fond of them as he is of Angelina Ballerina and Little Princess, so this DVD is almost tailor made for him.

Review: Milkshake Stars DVD Collection

Did it pass the weekend away entertainment test? Yes, absolutely. It kept him occupied, interested and engaged for the entire two hour journey. He liked the variety of programmes to watch. He enjoyed watching his old favourites, Peppa Pig, Thomas & Friends and Angelina Ballerina, as much as he enjoyed discovering new favourites such as Pip Ahoy!, Toby’s Travelling Circus and Jelly Jamm.

From a parental perspective, there are few things more annoying than putting a series DVD on and hearing the same theme tune every ten minutes, with this DVD there’s a variety of programmes, so it’s considerably less full-on. Plus it’s nice to see him enjoy the programmes. We chatted about the content of some of the shows, and explored themes around what he’d seen.

The Milkshake Stars DVD is released on Monday 8th September 2014. It is a brilliant blend of action, comedy and fun. We were sent a preview copy for review, but the DVD is widely available in the shops and online. It’s definitely going to be one of the most popular DVDs in his collection.

Note: We were sent the Milkshake Stars DVD free of charge for review purposes. All images and opinions are our own.
